How to have a great marriage

by | Jan 1, 2010 | Relationship Languages | 0 comments

I asked my husband what ingredients make a marriage great.  He gave me his thoughts and I share them here.  I agree that these are ingredients, a foundation, for a great marriage.  Here is what he said (all are of equal importance):

  1. Openness – being willing to share, try new things, and willing to listen
  2. Honesty/Integrity – being authentic, truthful, admit when you are wrong, be true to self, be true to one another, be true to the partnership
  3. Commitment – be willing to do whatever it takes, always think of the other first, appreciate each other to the fullest
  4. Honor – each other, the partnership, and what we stand for
  5. Choose to love – for connection, knowing each other, appreciating each other, being in love, and sharing time together
  6. Communication – knowing when to shut up, listen fully, open 2-way dialogue, listen to each other, truly hear each other, acknowledge each other, admit when wrong and be humble about it while saying sorry
  7. Faith – in each other, in our beliefs, in each other's beliefs, in our choices, and in each other's choices
  8. Support – stand by each other's goals and dreams, be able to say the hard things when necessary, be each other's cheerleader and best friend forever (BFF)

I felt this was a good representation of what men want and need in a marriage.  Women want these things too.  And that's why these are 8 ingredients for a great marriage.

What do you think?

Hi, I’m Dr. Dar…

If I could share just one thing with you today, let it be this: you have the power to shape your relationship into what you want it to be.

I am Dar, the Relationship Healer. I help couples to solve the communication and relationship issues that could potentially tear them apart.

Until I started on the coaching path that led to my formulation of the Relationship Languages, most of the problems in my life had been due to problematic relationships… relationships where I felt unable to communicate, where I was not being heard, where I was not feeling understood.

I have learned that, to create happy, healthy, and harmonious relationships even when you have differences, you have to learn how to give and receive communication in a healthy way. You have to feel safe expressing how you feel and what you need.

That’s the beauty of the Relationship Languages. Once understood, they are the key to safe, curious communication.

I’m here to help you on your journey to understanding and being understood.

From my heart to yours,
Dr.
