He cheated on me, for six years that I know of.

When we're busy with life, it can take a while to realize we're not thinking of ourselves in a positive way. Here are three reminders for you to think of yourself as an equal in your relationship, at home and at work.

Have you ever given yourself a timeout?

I`m not talking about a `go and sit on the bottom step until you`re ready to apologize` type of timeout.

I`m talking about when you recognize an argument with your partner is too heated or you`re stuck in a disagreement loop which is going nowhere.

An adult timeout can be a healthy way to deal with arguments in your relationship.

When you and your partner are caught up in an emotional wave, it`s hard to resolve the situation. You can feed off each other`s negatively charged emotions and lose perspective.

This is when It`s time to say, "I need a timeout."

A little tip is not to say "WE need a timeout" - an argument is never a good time to speak on behalf of your partner.

Taking a timeout will allow you to ride out the emotional wave. Then you and your partner can return to the conversation from a more neutral place.

During your time out reflect on...

🟣what the problem really is (often it`s not the trigger)
🟣what will resolve the situation for you
🟣which of your needs isn`t being met
🟣what your partner`s perspective may be
💜And, if you know your Relationship Language and that of your partner, think about what you need and what they need to make this conversation work.

During a settled time, talk to your partner about timeouts and suggest you use them the next time an argument erupts.

I was reading an article in Psychology Today yesterday. A woman was complaining about all the ways her partner was not being supportive or being a care giver when she had surgery. She was seeking advice about what to do about it because her partner could not look at her stitches or provide her with the nourishment she needed. She called him an impossible caregiver. She was looking for perfection, and demanded it.

The things she was saying about her partner, made it sound like he was her enemy. And she was very angry with him. She clearly wanted him to be who she wanted him to be.
